The AYSO Referee

The Referee’s Job
The Referee’s job is to be the official in charge of the match at every game. He/she is the independent arbiter and manager of the game. Their authority extends to everyone at the field, including players, team officials, spectators and assistant referees.

Who Are AYSO Referees?
AYSO Referees are volunteers, just like the coaches, team parents, field workers, administrators and almost all others involved with AYSO. Most Referees are parents or relatives of players. Many players themselves are Youth Referees and are welcomed. Any person 12 years of age or older can volunteer as a Referee.

How Are AYSO Referees Trained?
Each AYSO referee receives training geared to the level of the games they will be officiating. Each year returning referees are encouraged to take additional training to move up to higher badge levels. Every class addresses the Laws of the Game, psychological issues for players of various ages, and practical refereeing. Each class includes all course material.

How Are AYSO Referees Managed?
Getting the right referees to the right games is a major management task in every region. Referees are encouraged to work a variety of player levels to facilitate their learning and by working with other experience referees. The Referee Administrator will assist referees with assigning games that match their skills and comfort level.
